The 4 S Formula for Success

สูตรสำเร็จ 4 ส
Lessons Beginner 10 min Apr 7, 2026

Welcome back to your Dhamma Thai lesson. Today we are diving into a beautiful teaching about meditation called the 4 S Formula for Success (สูตรสำเร็จ 4 ส).

In Thai, many positive qualities begin with the letter (Saw Suea). This video is perfect for absolute beginners because it uses simple, repetitive words to explain how to find peace of mind through meditation.

1. Key Vocabulary: The 4 S's of Meditation

Venerable Luang Pi Narong explains that to succeed in meditation, you need four important qualities. Notice that they all begin with the "S" sound.

  • สติ (Sa-ti): Mindfulness / Awareness.
This is one of the most important words in Thai Buddhism. It means being present and knowing what you are doing right now.
  • สบาย (Sa-bai): Comfortable / Relaxed.
You may already know สบาย ๆ. In meditation, the body and mind should feel relaxed, not forced.
  • สม่ำเสมอ (Sa-mum Sa-mer): Consistently / Regularly.
This means doing it little by little, but continuing steadily.
  • สังเกต (Sang-get): To observe / To notice.
After meditation, you observe how you felt and what worked well for you.

2. Core Actions: How to "Place" Your Heart

The video uses a very gentle verb to describe meditation:

วางใจ
Wang-jai
"To rest the heart" or "to place the mind."
  • วาง (Wang): To place / To put down.
  • ใจ (Jai): Heart / Mind.

Luang Por also emphasizes two more important meditation words:

  • หยุด (Yut): To stop.
  • นิ่ง (Ning): Still / Motionless.
หยุด เป็นตัวสำเร็จ
Yut pen tua sum-ret
"Stopping is the key to success."

In Thai meditation, we stop our racing thoughts so the heart can become หยุดนิ่ง (Yut Ning) - stopped and still.

3. Meditation Phrases for Practice

These short phrases are perfect for relaxing while improving your Thai:

ใจสบาย
Jai Sa-bai
"A comfortable heart."
นิ่ง ๆ สบาย ๆ
Ning Ning, Sa-bai Sa-bai
"Still and comfortably."
Teacher's Tip

Repeating a word twice in Thai makes it softer, gentler, or more descriptive. That is why นิ่ง ๆ and สบาย ๆ feel so natural in meditation language.

สัมมา อะระหัง
Samma Arahang
A traditional meditation mantra used to help the mind stay centered and focused.

4. Grammar Tip: The "Sa-" Sound

You will notice that many words in this lesson begin with a Sa- sound. In this video, สติ and สบาย are your best friends. When you hear this sound pattern often in meditation vocabulary, it can point to a quality or state of being.

Pronunciation Note

When saying สติ (Sa-ti), keep the t crisp, like the "t" in "table," but without a strong puff of air.

5. Your Practice Task

Try This Three Times
ใจนิ่ง
Jai Ning

Say Jai Ning three times while taking a deep breath. Feel how the ng sound at the end of both words rings softly, almost like a bell.

If you want to listen again to the main explanation, the key segment about the 4 S formula starts around 04:28. This lesson is a gentle reminder that meditation success is not about force, but about mindfulness, comfort, consistency, and observation.
