What is Vijja Dhammakaya?

วิชชาธรรมกาย คืออะไร?
Lessons Beginner 10 min Apr 7, 2026

Sawatdee krub! I am delighted to be your Thai teacher today. Using Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) is a beautiful way to learn Thai because the language used is often clear, calm, and repetitive — perfect for absolute beginners.

Today, we are looking at a teaching by Luang Por Dhammajayo regarding the meaning of "Vijja Dhammakaya." Even though this video is short, it contains some very important "root" words that will help you understand both Thai culture and Buddhist philosophy. Let's break down the key vocabulary and phrases.

1. Key Vocabulary (The Building Blocks)

  • วิชชา (Wich-cha): Knowledge or Wisdom. 00:08
Note: In everyday Thai, we use the word Wich-a (วิชา) for school subjects, but in Dhamma, Wich-cha refers to "clear-knowing" or "insight."
  • ธรรมกาย (Dhamma-kaya): The Body of Enlightenment / Dhammakaya. 00:08
  • ความรู้ (Kwam-roo): Knowledge. 00:08
  • เห็น (Hen): To see. 00:08
  • เรียน (Rian): To learn/study. 01:44
  • กิเลส (Gi-let): Impurities or defilements of the mind (like greed, anger, or delusion). 00:42

2. Sentence Breakdown

"Wich-cha Dhammakaya" Defined

วิชชา แปลว่า ความรู้แจ้ง ที่เกิดจากการเห็นแจ้ง ด้วยธรรมกาย
Wich-cha plae wa kwam-roo-jaeng tee gerd jak gan hen-jaeng duay Dhamma-kaya
"Wich-cha means the clear knowledge that arises from clear seeing with the Dhammakaya."
Beginner Tip

In Thai, if you want to ask what a word means, you say: [Word] แปลว่า อะไร? (Plae wa arai?) — What does [Word] mean?

The "How" of Learning

วิชชาธรรมกาย คือ วิชาที่ต้องเรียนรู้ด้วยธรรมกาย
Wich-cha Dhamma-kaya keu wich-a tee tong rian-roo duay Dhamma-kaya
"Wich-cha Dhammakaya is a subject that must be learned through the Dhammakaya."
Grammar Point

The word ต้อง (Tong) 00:20 means "must." It is a very useful word for beginners!
Example: I must eat = ผม ต้อง กิน (Pom tong gin)

3. A Powerful Metaphor: The Factory

Luang Por explains that standard Dhamma practice is like putting out a single fire, but Wich-cha Dhammakaya goes deeper.

โรงงานผลิตกิเลส
Rong-ngan pa-lit gi-let
"The factory that produces defilements."

Instead of just fixing the small problems at the end, he teaches that we must go to the source (the factory) to solve the problem permanently. 01:32

  • โรงงาน (Rong-ngan): Factory. 01:09
  • ผลิต (Pa-lit): To produce/manufacture. 01:09

4. Cultural Bonus

Cultural Insight

Did you notice Luang Por often says นะจ๊ะ (Na-ja) or asks ตามทันไหมจ๊ะ? (Tam tan mai ja?) 00:50?

ตามทันไหม (Tam tan mai) means "Are you following? / Do you keep up?"

จ๊ะ (Ja) is a very sweet, polite particle. Monks often use this with laypeople to show kindness and endearment. As a beginner, you will usually learn "Krub" (for men) or "Ka" (for women), but hearing "Ja" helps you feel the gentleness of the Thai language.

5. Your Practice Task

Try This
เรียน วิชชา ธรรมกาย
Rian Wich-cha Dhamma-kaya

Try saying this phrase out loud: "I study the knowledge of Dhammakaya." Focus on keeping each syllable clear and even.

How did that feel for your first lesson? If you have questions about specific sounds or words from the video, please ask!
